The 7075 aluminum square bar is a product that is frequently used in aerospace, aviation and plastics industries. It is a very tough aluminum and considered to be one of the strongest aluminum alloys available. Its strength-to-weight ratio is excellent, which is why it’s commonly used for high stressed parts. While in the annealed condition, 7075 aluminum can be formed. However, if there is difficulty, the metal can be placed in temperatures between 200 and 250 degrees F to make it more formable. The springback of this alloy is greater when it’s being formed. To enhance the strength of 7075 alloys, heat treatment can be used. The conductivity level of this metal is 36 percent of copper. The properties it has is excellent when in low temperatures as well.
This metal can be formed using hot working. Cold working isn’t recommended for this alloy. It also has poor weldability, however, resistance welding can be used. Joining techniques like gas welding and arc welding aren’t recommended because it can degrade the corrosion resistance of the metal. When solution annealing, the temperature should be set to 900 degrees F and the metal should be serviced for two hours, then water quenched. Afterward, precipitation hardening heat treatment can be used.
The applications this product is commonly used for include highly stressed structural parts that are mainly used in aerospace and aviation. These applications include missile parts, aircraft fittings, fuse parts, keys, meter gears, regulating valve parts and worm gears. It can also be used for parts relating to commercial aircraft components and defense equipment. In the plastics industry, this metal is used to develop molds.
